Your first appointment
What happens at your first dental visit in Milpitas
Plan for 45 to 60 minutes. You leave with a written estimate and a plan you understood before you agreed to it — nothing gets started on the day you first walk in unless you are in pain and ask for it.
-
Check in2 minutes
Arrive five to ten minutes early. If you finished the digital forms we send after booking, there is no clipboard — we confirm your photo ID and benefits and you go straight through. Tell the front desk if you are anxious; it changes how the whole appointment is run.
-
Full examination20 minutes
Dr. Khera examines your teeth, gums and bite using low-radiation digital X-rays, an intraoral camera and a 3D scan, and screens for decay, gum disease and oral cancer. You see the images on screen as she goes.
-
Professional cleaning20 minutes
Plaque and tartar removed, teeth polished, gum health checked for early gingivitis — then a straight answer about what to change at home. See what a routine cleaning and a dental exam each cover.
-
Your plan, and what it costs10 minutes
Your own X-rays and photos on screen, every question answered, and a written plain-language estimate built around your goals, your timeline and your budget. If something can safely wait, we say so. See the Good Faith Estimate policy.

Call 48 hours ahead and we will have your benefits checked before you arrive

If you have been putting this off
Nervous about becoming a new dental patient in Milpitas?
We keep accepting new patients who have not sat in a dental chair for years. It is more common than you think.
A lot of the people who walk in here have not seen a dentist in years, and they arrive braced for a lecture. They do not get one. Dental anxiety is common enough that the whole appointment is built around it — and the fastest way to make your visit easier is simply to say so when you book.
Tell us and we schedule extra time, brief the team before you arrive, explain every step before it happens, and stop the moment you ask. Nitrous oxide is available if you want it.
If you are in pain right now, do not wait for a new patient slot — call instead. Same-day emergency dental appointments are held open every day the office is open.
And if the worry is the bill rather than the chair, the estimate comes before any treatment: see payment plans and the in-house dental membership plan for patients without insurance.

What we use
The technology behind a new patient exam at our Milpitas office
- Low-radiation digital X-rays
A fraction of the exposure of traditional film, with images on screen the moment they are taken.
- Intraoral camera
An HD camera shows you what the dentist is looking at, so a recommendation is something you can see rather than take on trust.
- 3D digital scanning
Replaces impression trays for crowns, aligners and night guards.
- Overjet AI diagnostics
FDA-cleared software that reads your X-rays alongside Dr. Khera, as a second set of eyes on early decay and bone loss.
- Paperless records
Digital intake, charting and claim submission — which is why check-in takes two minutes rather than fifteen.
- A conservative approach
Better data means treating what genuinely needs treating. Watching a small spot is a legitimate plan, and often the right one.
Family-friendly
Accepting new pediatric and family patients in Milpitas
Toddlers through grandparents, at the same office, often on the same day — one trip instead of three. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child’s first visit by age one, or whenever the first tooth appears, which is early enough to prevent problems rather than repair them.
The team uses child-friendly language and a gentle, unhurried approach, because a first appointment that goes well is what makes the next twenty go well.

Common questions
New patient FAQ — booking, insurance and your first visit in Milpitas
Is Signature Smiles accepting new patients in Milpitas?
Yes. Signature Smiles Dental Group is accepting new patients of all ages at 440 E Calaveras Blvd, Milpitas, CA 95035. Most first appointments are available within one to two weeks. Same-day slots are held back for dental emergencies, so call rather than book online if you are in pain.
How do I book my first appointment as a new patient?
Book online through the practice booking page at any hour, or call (408) 946-0777 while the office is open. After you book, we send a secure link so you can complete your new patient forms at home on any device, which means there is no paperwork waiting for you at check-in.
How long does a first dental appointment take?
Plan for 45 to 60 minutes. That covers check-in, a full examination with digital X-rays, an intraoral camera review and a 3D scan, a professional cleaning, and time to go through your treatment plan and written cost estimate. Arriving five to ten minutes early keeps it to the hour.
What should I bring to my first visit?
Bring a valid photo ID, your dental insurance card with the Member ID and Group Number, a list of any medications you take, and details of allergies or medical conditions relevant to dental care. Recent X-rays from a previous dentist are useful but not required. If you completed the digital forms at home, that is everything.
Do you accept my dental insurance as a new patient?
Signature Smiles accepts PPO dental plans from 14 major carriers, including Delta Dental, Aetna, Guardian, Cigna, MetLife, UnitedHealthcare and Anthem Blue Cross, and files the claim for you. The practice does not accept DHMO or managed-care plans. Benefits are verified free before your first visit; call (408) 946-0777 with your card to hand and the front desk will check it while you wait.
What if I do not have dental insurance?
Uninsured patients are welcome. The practice runs an in-house membership plan that covers exams, cleanings and X-rays for a flat annual fee with a discount on other treatment. For larger work, CareCredit and Cherry offer installment plans, subject to approval by those providers. You always get a written estimate before treatment begins.
Do you treat patients with dental anxiety?
Yes, and it is worth mentioning when you book rather than on the day. We schedule extra time, brief the team before you arrive, explain each step before it happens, and stop whenever you ask. Nitrous oxide is available for in-chair relaxation. Many of our patients had not seen a dentist for years before their first visit here.
Do you accept new patients from Fremont, San Jose and Santa Clara?
Yes. A large share of new patient registrations come from outside Milpitas. From Fremont, take I-880 or I-680 south and exit toward Calaveras Blvd — Warm Springs, Irvington, Mission San Jose, Centerville and Ardenwood are all under fifteen minutes outside of rush hour. From San Jose, take US-101, I-880 or CA-237 north to the same exit; Berryessa and North San José run roughly ten to fifteen minutes. From Santa Clara, take US-101, CA-237 or I-880 toward Milpitas and exit near Calaveras Blvd; Rivermark, the Old Quad and the Levi’s Stadium area run fifteen to twenty minutes, and the VTA Orange Line covers the same trip without a car. Sunnyvale, Newark, Union City and Cupertino patients are welcome on the same terms, and there is a free lot at the office.
Do you offer Saturday dental appointments in Milpitas?
Yes. The Milpitas office is open Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, along with Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at the same hours. The office is closed Tuesday and Sunday. Saturday appointments book up first, so they are worth requesting early.
Do you accept children as new patients?
Yes. Signature Smiles is a family practice and sees children through to grandparents, often on the same day so one trip covers the household. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first visit by age one, or whenever the first tooth appears.
Is there a new patient offer?
New patients get 500 dollars off Invisalign clear aligner treatment. Mention the offer when you book your consultation. It is subject to clinical qualification, consultation and applicable terms, and the front desk can give you the full details before you commit to anything.
